“…You Wake Up, and Time Has Slipped Away…”
Photographs…
…Our only visual link to the past.
Whether our own or even somebody else’s, it’s always nostalgic and delightful to flip through photos,.. identifying people, enjoying scenery or reliving memories from days gone by. Recording life as it happens, time is stopped… frozen forever for another day …to be reopened and enjoyed again.
With todays technology the photographer is provided with instant gratification. With the ability to re-shoot a scene immediately if the first is deemed poor, not a moment of potential treasured memory is lost. Having two hobbyist photographers in my family I am continually delighted as special events are immediately captured.
Rummaging through my albums I smile at the recollections my own photos stir as sleeping memories are awakened. Sometimes every detail can be vibrantly recalled,.. the scent of the air, the conversations taking place, or the laughter being shared. All events are relived again …pleasantly enjoyed once more.
Being left sentimentally satisfied after reviewing the pictorial documentation of my life, it is the photos of ‘old’ where my passions lie..serving as bridges to times unknown.
Offering information and a connection to family, it is in these photos where answers are held as to who we are… and from where we come. Because of these treasured preserved images, the family tree can be climbed…
…Resemblances can be seen and discovered …a fact that would otherwise be left unknown.
During my examination of these older photographs, I marvel at the family likenesses I see. Not readily noticing just how many traits or appearances are passed down from generations, I am taken aback at the similarities.
As I compare photographs of my daughters and my mom through the various stages of life, the differentiating clues are noticed only by the age of the photo itself. Visually seeing my ‘mom’ in my ‘girls’, ..I am left moved. There is a comforting and appreciated realization that she has left her mark…passing a piece of herself onto future generations …just as she…and myself… bear ‘pieces’ of generations past.
…It is this passing and receiving of family traits that identify who we are… similar branches of a single tree.
A diligent attempt to continually capture all that is held dear will provide cherished links for future generations…
…For photographs provide a tangible reflection of one’s life …as well as a glimpse for others into an unknown past.
Memorializing forever all that was loved, …
…A picture speaks a thousand words.
“..Remember…
Do you Remember? ….
..The Times of Your Life…”
Until next time…Liz

Thanks for the trip down your family’s memory lane. There are definitely some strong family resemblances going on in the Hodgins-Huemmer clan.

the fearless blog
Always a great post…always a pleasure to visit.
As my mother has aged, she has slowly started handing over the many photo albums she has collected through the years. I guess I am “the collector” in my small family, so it is fitting that I hold and one day pass on the memories of the past to my children. There are two sides to me: the sentimental and the strong. I am usually very strong, the leader of the pack, the problem solver and if every one else is caving in I can be a rock. However, when I am alone with my thoughts OR with a stack of old photos, oh my… I can be extremely sentimental. I can just sit and look at photo after photo and cry my eyes out. Some of the photos remind me of happy times while others just remind me of painful or difficult moments I wish to forget.
Your post, however, provides me with another reason to cherish these pictures and remember…

Thanks Mar…
I love the old photographs. As I said, it allows me to pictorially travel back in time..(something that I would literally love to do.) I have a passion for imagining how life must have been in years past.
Secondly, I feel an obligation to learn all that I can of my family’s ‘tree’ to pass on to my children.
As I am fast becoming the next generation in ‘hierarchy’ as the current ‘matriarchs’ are aging, I feel it a respectful duty to family to learn all that I can of relatives past..I hope one day, it is done for me…
Thanks for visiting, my friend, and sharing an honest piece of yourself with me.

Oh my gosh, looking at those family photos was wild. It created a whole bunch of feelings in me and they aren’t even my photos. I felt tickled and fascinated, sad and poignant and at the same time oddly safe or comforted. Now, isn’t that interesting. I guess those are the feelings I have when I look at my own old photos. I think this is a wonderful post Liz. You are so creative and pick things we all relate to. Seeing you do this made you even more human to me, more real I guess. Thank you. Beautiful Liz. You are so down to earth and real. I like that.

Thank you Robin..What a beautiful compliment to receive!..It means a lot…
Family is the one ‘thing’ we ALL have and CAN relate to. For better or worse they are ‘ours’ and shall forever be the ‘roots’ from whence we came as well as our future reaching ‘branches’.
I’m glad this post stirred feelings for your own family that you are familiar with..for it is the similar emotions we experience that unite us all as a ‘family of people’.
Thank you for the visit today Robin…always nice to have you here!
