Grey Wolf

Canis lupus

“Communication”

An intelligent, social animal, the grey wolf lives in packs consisting of several to two dozen individuals.  Within this family group, there is a clearly defined dominance hierarchy giving only the alpha male and female the right to mate.  With litters of about 6-7 pups, all the members of the pack care solictiously for the young, who are fed regurgated meat by their parents.  The communal howling of a pack may serve to assemble its members, communicate with other packs,  advertise its territorial claims or simply be a source of pleasure.
