Rugged terrain and dense shrubs provide escape,  cover, and den sites under fallen trees, in hollow trees or caves or in previously occupied dens.  Black bears are excellent tree climbers and will use trees to escape from danger.  Cubs are born very small and require maternal care for 2-3 years.  Even when feeding independently,  yearling bears need protection from older males which are known to kill and eat them.
